Trivial

In order to qualify as a grain of sand, you must be rock or mineral ranging from .0625mm to 2 mm in diameter. Geologically, what do you call the next larger size class of rock/mineral granules and what do you call the next smaller class?

(Yes, I admit, only to a geek who edited a book on Mars, could sand be interesting.)

You are right about the silt.
You are close about the granule, but only in the first three letters. (What would you call a collection of the larger granules?)

:) Nerd Jessie would be my most favorite action figure of myself. Right next to Pajama Party Jessie. That's it. I'm starting a line of geeky dolls.

Oh and another point to you Miss Sarah H.!
