Trivial

In order to qualify as a grain of sand, you must be rock or mineral ranging from .0625mm to 2 mm in diameter. Geologically, what do you call the next larger size class of rock/mineral granules and what do you call the next smaller class?

(Yes, I admit, only to a geek who edited a book on Mars, could sand be interesting.)

In Chicago, the sun has grown a little brighter, the breeze a little warmer, and, as you may have heard, one of our neighbors has been elected President of the United States.

Corn Chowder

This is a great fall soup. So easy! Here is roughly how I make it (mostly following a recipe in the More-with-Less Mennonite cookbook):
Combine in pot:
1 c. water
2-3 large diced potatoes
1 chopped green pepper
2 t. salt
2 t. pepper
1 t. tumeric
Cover and simmer about 10 min. Add:
2 cans cream-style corn
Simmer 5 min.
1 1/2 c. milk
1 c. shredded cheddar
Stir until cheese is melted. Do not let it boil.

Most Documented Dog Update

It just cracks us up for some reason. We had to evacuate the condo for another open house today, so Max in tow, we hit other open houses and ran some errands. Like every car trip, he is elated in the beginning, insisting that his head is out the window and that his ears flap in the wind. The look on his face says that he is ready to take on the whole wide world. Then after an hour of not getting to get out (or come into the grocery store with us) he is mopey and deflated...but still insists that his head be out the car window.

Festivites

Halloween Critical Mass was yet again one crazy costume parade on wheels. We broke off the route in time to meet up with Mitch for a late diner at Clarke's. You probably know, I love Halloween with a vengeance. And in Chicago, it's like stepping in to some surreal NyQuil induced dream. Last night was a trip. Especially from the vantage point of a bike. From early in the evening peddling south through Rogers Park, where I saw a young woman in a beautiful, fluffy and elaborate princess costume walking by herself, frowning and pulling long drags off a cigarette...to the large bunny and half dozen Sarah Palins biking en mass...to the creepy Joker (doing the exact Heath Ledger makeup and faces) stalking around in the diner while we ate. I kept amusing myself by thinking: What if this is just how every day life was?...What if people always dressed up as animals and slinky Snow Whites and on a regular basis, enormous groups of people took over the streets with their bikes, and played loud music outside, and billions of kids walked around outside eating out of bags of candy? I don't know, it seems a little nuts, but I think it might be fun.
